Megan’s Unusual Gift – Book Review

Megan has a gift that her mother despises and fears. She is a twelve-year-old girl who knows that she is very different from other normal people, and cannot seem to find anyone who can relate to her gift. On the other hand, the only people who understand her are already dead. Written by Owen Jones (then, Ceri Carpenter), The Misconception – A Spirit Guide, A Ghost Tiger, and One Scary Mother!  (then, The Story of the Development of a Psychic Teenager) is about Megan’s journey and lessons she learns through her ability and her special friends.

I am impressed with Megan’s determination to bravely endure the cruel punishments from her mother and being isolated from other normal people. Her friends, especially Wacinhinsha, are definitely her salvation. Jones’ (Carpenter’s) characters are well-fleshed out and easily relatable for readers, although I am quite frustrated with her father, who is exasperatingly clueless about his daughter’s predicament. I find no weakness in the plot; it is well-written and justifies the great premise quite well. As a whole, The Misconception does make you think; if you meet someone like Megan, would you turn the other cheek or give the person a chance for your acceptance?

All in all, a nice, short and entertaining read worth the time and effort of all readers. This is a paranormal story that is not really about the things that go bump in the night, but rather about a young girl’s struggle and persistence in a world that barely has room for understanding her uniqueness. I look forward to seeing how Megan continues to cope with the normal world and developing her special ability more.
