Personal and professional background
I first went to the USSR on a school cruise in July 1968. I witnessed the huge amount of military armour on the key-side in Leningrad Docks days before the invasion of Czechoslovakia.
I wrote to the mayor of our sister town in Germany at 16 years-of-age to ask for a summer job and lodgings and got them.
I studied French, German and Latin to ‘A Level’ in school, and Russian in Portsmouth and Leningrad.
After my degree, I went to live in The Netherlands for nine years. On returning to Wales, I joined my three brothers in my father’s construction firm. First as a labourer, then as a decorator. My brothers and I were also directors of the company. When I was made a director, I altered my profession at NatWest Bank to read ‘Painter and Director’. The staff crossed out director and inserted ‘decorator’.
A few years before my father retired, I was called into the office to computerise it and ‘learn the ropes’. I then became the office manager, Finance Director and Company Secretary.
I moved to Thailand in 2004 to marry a woman I had met on a double date while on holiday there that year. Since living in this isolated, rural Thai village, I have written 55 novels and novelettes, and 200 self-help books, many of which have been narrated and translated. At present there are more than 1,200 books in the British Library with my name as author on them.

You can find my books in every known on or off line bookshop, or they can be ordered in remote places. However, I recommend Tektime, as they have been very good to me, unlike most of the big American stores like Amazon, with which I have been having problems for about five years.

Genres, themes, USP and styles
The main genres are Spiritual/Metaphysical and Visionary Fiction, but there are also thrillers and military dramas there.
It was once written that:
Owen Jones is a diverse author known for his captivating storytelling across multiple genres, including romantic thrillers, fantasy, children’s literature, and practical non-fiction. His works, such as Behind The Smile, Daisy’s Chain and the Psychic Megan Series, explore complex relationships and rich cultural insights. Owen also offers guidance on various important matters through his non-fiction titles.
One standout USP for Owen Jones could be his Cultural Focus. His strong emphasis on cultural narratives, especially with Welsh and Asian settings, sets him apart and allows him to attract readers who are interested in diverse, international stories and perspectives. This not only enriches his storytelling but also broadens his appeal in a globalized literary market.
Owen Jones blends supernatural themes with rich Welsh cultural elements, offering readers a unique fusion of folklore, mysticism, and the supernatural. This combination sets his stories apart in both the fantasy and paranormal genres, making them particularly appealing to fans of culturally grounded, otherworldly narratives.
5. Sample Interview Questions and Answers
1 Do you prefer to read a particular genre?
Not really. Perhaps, nineteenth century Russian novels, but I had hitch-hiked over 200,000 kilometres before I was 30, and I would usually swap my read book for anything. I don’t think I would enjoy Mills & Boone or Barbara Cartland though.
2 Do you write in the same genre? If not which one?
I have always found this such a difficult question, but I was recently advised that most of my books fall into the Spiritual/Metaphysical and Visionary Genres.
3 Have you always written and what got you started professionally?
I have always written essays (at school) and letters home (when travelling), but my father got me thinking about writing a novel, when he asked me ‘to do what I thought necessary’ with two shopping bags of his automatic writings. I published those in 2012, and haven’t stopped.
4 How many books have you published?
I publish about 20 books a month in translation, but in English, about 55 novels (large and small), and about 200 self-help books.
5 Which one would you like to tell us about?
I love them all, but perhaps the first one: Behind The Smile: Daddy’s Hobby – The story of Lek, a bar girl in Pattaya.
6 Why did you write this book and what is it about?
My wife’s, and so my, cousin had a bar in Pattaya, and every day for about a year, the girls working there would tell me their stories – most about the men they knew or had known. I was a safe, older gentleman because I was related to the boss, and going out with her favourite cousin. I put a lot of those stories and experiences into this book. In fact, it mushroomed into seven volumes of 750,000 words over the following few years.
7 What would you like your next book to be on?
I have felt for a long time that I would like to write a story about a Thai, or Welsh hero or/and heroine. Set in olden days… but no-one has presented him or herself to me yet.
8. If you could go anywhere in the universe, where would you go and why?
Any inhabited planet, just to see what it was like 🙂
9 Is there anything you can share about yourself or your work that not many people know?
I’m a Spiritualist and always have been. So were my parents, and my father’s family, which originated in Anglesey.
10 Have you ever accidentally called your spouse/partner by the name of a character in your latest book and if so what was his or her reaction?
Yes, I have. When I was obsessed with the ‘Lek Series’ (Behind The Smile). I called my wife Lek. She was more shocked than hurt or upset, but not very pleased about it. I think I only did it the once.
6. Achievements and Milestones
A] I have appeared on the Amazon Best-sellers’ List three of four times. Not the one that spans all categories, but the sub-categories like thrillers, biographical fiction etc.. Twice for volumes of ‘Behind The Smile’, once for ‘Keeping Koi Carp’, and one more, but I haven’t checked for at least seven or eight years.
B] A lawyer, and school governor from Mexico, and a university lecturer in Cairo, asked if they could use books from my series ‘Psychic Megan’ to teach English and philosophy.
C] A Chinese post-graduate asked if she could do her thesis on ‘Psychic Megan’ for her doctorate in China.
I am most proud of B] and C].
