My Slipped Disc & Resulting Backache

My slipped disc and resulting backache problems started in 2013. I remember exactly when, where and how. We were coming back through the outdoor section of the Duty Free Market at the Laos border with Thailand in the summer of 2013. It was sweltering hot, so I stopped to mop my brow, then turned to take the handle of out suitcase. I literally felt something move in my backbone, and a sharp pain as if I had been stabbed.

My backache got worse and worse over the months. Local doctors gave me loads of tablets, and took X-Rays and Ultra Scans, but it nothing ever helped more than a few beers did. When I started walking bent over, my chest parallel to the ground, Neem took action of the last resort.

Bangkok, here we come

She bought us train tickets to go to BKK to go to a good hospital. On the day of our departure, a skinny old lady appeared in our garden and offered to inspect my back. Her sister lived in our village, so she probably heard of my back pain through her. Anyway, she was an expert in Northern Thai Massage. She gave me a session, and really hurt me. This is a very rough form of massage.

When the two-hour session was over, she said that she could fix my backache in five sessions over five weeks. I said, “Give me five sessions over five days running”. She laughed and said that I couldn’t take it. She was a little old lady of 40 kg, and I was 1.80m and 120 kg.

Her Cure for Backache

Anyway, we didn’t take the train, and five weeks later I was completely cured. When I met her, I was walking bent over double. In one day, after the first session, I could walk upright. Those five sessions kept my back in order till this year! So, she (I was never told her name) cured my rotten back for 12 years without any further intervention, tweaks or tablets.

Unfortunately, she has since retired, and won’t help me with this current bout of backache now 🙁 Still, it shows that there is help out there, if you can only find it. Wish me luck!
