Baron Sedolfsen, president of a secret Scandinavian society that venerates the painter Francisco de Goya and his beloved wife Joie, presides over an eerie initiation. The new members are soon dispatched to Calle Goya, Fuengirola — home to one of the society’s many hidden properties on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

Meanwhile, Frank, a London banker, marries Joy, a charming young Thai woman who works at the embassy. As a wedding gift, Frank’s boss lends them his apartment in Calle Goya for their honeymoon — unaware that this gesture will plunge them into a living nightmare.

Joy, sensitive and deeply intuitive, becomes convinced the apartment is haunted. Her unease spirals into terror and then madness. Frank, desperate and out of his depth, returns her to her remote village in northern Thailand, only to face hostility and suspicion from her family.

Their journey takes them from the sunlit streets of Fuengirola to the rice fields of Thailand, and eventually back to the UK, where Frank learns of the Goya Society’s involvement in their suffering. What follows is an unsettling tale of secret cults, cross-cultural strain, psychological horror — and an unexpected second chance.
