The Rainy Riverside Market

An unexpected meeting in the rain

Mali and her grandmother were walking down to the Riverside Market under an umbrella to shield them from the light, warm afternoon rain.

It didn’t always rain on their two market days a week, but they always took an umbrella just incase. If it wasn’t raining, it was useful as a parasol.

“What do you want for tea this evening, Mali?” asked Grandma Noi.

“Oh, I am not so hungry. I had a big lunch at school today… just some fruit, I think, Grandma”, she replied

They walked over to a fruit stall that they used frequently, and joined the small group of people that were already there. There seemed to be an air of amusement about the place. Mali’s eyes widened when she realised the cause. It was a boy trying to buy some mangoes. A mischievous grin spread across her face, as she said,

“I know that boy, Grandma Noi. It’s the English boy who joined my Second Form class yesterday. He can’t speak any Thai, and the fruit vendor doesn’t seem to speak any English! Can we go and help him, Grandma Noi, please?”

Grandma Noi nodded, “Yes, of course! He does seem to be having trouble, doesn’t he?” and they moved through the bystanders to the boy’s side.

“Hello. Is there a problem here?” said Mali in English. “Your name is Ben, isn’t it? We are in the same class at school. Do you remember me? My name is Mali, and this is my Grandmother, Grandma Noi. Can I help you?”

มะลิกับยายของเธอกำลังเดินไปตลาดริมแม่น้ำใต้ร่มคันหนึ่ง เพื่อกันฝนบ่ายอ่อน ๆ ที่ตกอย่างอบอุ่นสบาย อาทิตย์หนึ่งตลาดเปิดสองวัน และแม้ฝนจะไม่ได้ตกทุกครั้ง พวกเธอก็มักพกร่มไปเผื่อไว้เสมอ ถ้าฝนไม่ตก ก็ใช้บังแดดได้เช่นกัน

“เย็นนี้อยากกินอะไรกับน้ำชาดีล่ะ มะลิ?” ยายน้อยถาม

“หนูยังไม่ค่อยหิวค่ะ วันนี้กินมื้อกลางวันที่โรงเรียนเยอะมาก… เอาแค่ผลไม้ก็น่าจะพอค่ะ ยาย” มะลิตอบ

ทั้งสองเดินไปที่ร้านผลไม้เจ้าประจำ และเข้าไปรวมกับคนกลุ่มเล็ก ๆ ที่ยืนอยู่ก่อนแล้ว บรรยากาศดูเหมือนทุกคนกำลังขบขันอะไรบางอย่าง มะลิเบิกตากว้างเมื่อเห็นสาเหตุ เด็กผู้ชายคนหนึ่งกำลังพยายามซื้อมะม่วง รอยยิ้มเจ้าเล่ห์ปรากฏขึ้นบนใบหน้าของเธอ ก่อนจะพูดว่า

“หนูรู้จักเด็กคนนั้นค่ะยาย เขาคือเด็กอังกฤษที่เพิ่งมาเข้าเรียนห้องเดียวกับหนูเมื่อวานนี้ เขาพูดภาษาไทยไม่ได้ แล้วแม่ค้าก็ดูเหมือนจะพูดอังกฤษไม่ได้ด้วย! เราไปช่วยเขาได้ไหมคะยาย?”

ยายน้อยพยักหน้า “ได้สิจ๊ะ ดูท่าเขาจะลำบากจริง ๆ นั่นแหละ” แล้วทั้งสองก็เดินแทรกผ่านคนดูเข้าไปหาเด็กผู้ชายคนนั้น

“สวัสดี มีปัญหาอะไรหรือเปล่า?” มะลิพูดเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ “เธอชื่อเบนใช่ไหม? เราอยู่ห้องเดียวกันที่โรงเรียน จำฉันได้ไหม? ฉันชื่อมะลิ นี่คุณยายของฉัน ชื่อน้อย มีอะไรให้ช่วยไหม?”

เบนรีบหันมาทางเธอทันที “โอ้ เอ่อ สวัสดีมะลิ สวัสดีครับคุณน้อย ดีใจจริง ๆ ที่ได้เจอพวกคุณ! ผมกำลังสร้างปัญหาใหญ่เลย เพราะยังพูดไทยไม่ได้ ผมแค่อยากซื้อมะม่วงสุกสักกิโลเดียวเอง” เขาพูดพลางชี้ไปที่ผลไม้

แม่ค้าดูดีใจที่เห็นมะลิกับยายน้อย เพราะคนที่มายืนดูขวางหน้าร้านจนเธอขายของไม่ได้ เธอยิ้มให้ทั้งคู่แล้วพูดว่า “พ่อหนุ่มคนนี้ต้องการอะไรเหรอน้อย? ฉันพูดอังกฤษไม่ได้นะ”

Ben turned quickly to face her. “Oh, er, hello, Mali. Hello, Noi. Am I pleased to see you! I am making such a problem here because I can’t speak Thai yet. I only want to buy a kilo of ripe mangoes”, he said pointing to some fruit.

The vendor was pleased to see Mali and Grandma Noi, because the onlookers were blocking access to her stall so she could not sell her fruit. She smiled at them both. “What does the young man want. Grandma Noi? I don’t speak English?” she said.

“Those mangoes are not ripe, Ben They are green, so not sweet. You want these yellow mangoes here”, said Mali.

Once they had all bought what they wanted, she spoke to Ben again, “After shopping, Grandma Noi and I usually walk down to a small café by the river to watch the boats and have a cake and a cup of tea. It is not far. Would you like to come with us? The rain is light and warm, but you are getting very wet. Is that all right, Grandma Noi? May Ben come to the café with us?” Grandma Noi nodded and smiled kindly.

Mali held the umbrella over the three of them and they left the market for the nearby river. Grandma Noi led them to her favourite table, and, once seated, she signalled to the waitress, whom they knew well.

“Hello, Gail! How are you today?’ said Grandma Noi, ‘Three cups of tea and three small cakes, please. There is an extra one of us today. His name is Ben. He is from England and doesn’t speak Thai yet. He is in Mali’s class at school’.

“มะม่วงพวกนั้นยังไม่สุกนะเบน มันยังเขียวอยู่เลยไม่หวาน เธอต้องเอามะม่วงสีเหลืองพวกนี้ต่างหาก” มะลิอธิบาย

เมื่อทุกคนซื้อของเสร็จแล้ว มะลิก็หันไปพูดกับเบนอีกครั้ง “หลังซื้อของเสร็จ ปกติกับยายจะเดินไปคาเฟ่เล็ก ๆ ริมแม่น้ำ นั่งดูเรือ กินเค้ก แล้วก็ดื่มชา ร้านอยู่ไม่ไกลเลย เธออยากไปกับพวกเราไหม? ฝนตกไม่แรงและอากาศก็อุ่น แต่เธอเปียกมากแล้ว ยายคะ เบนไปกับเราได้ไหม?” ยายน้อยพยักหน้าและยิ้มอย่างใจดี

มะลิกางร่มให้ทั้งสามคน แล้วพากันเดินออกจากตลาดไปยังริมแม่น้ำใกล้ ๆ ยายน้อยพาพวกเขาไปยังโต๊ะโปรดของเธอ และเมื่อทุกคนนั่งลงแล้ว เธอก็ส่งสัญญาณเรียกพนักงานเสิร์ฟที่คุ้นเคยกันดี

“สวัสดี เกล วันนี้เป็นอย่างไรบ้าง?” ยายน้อยพูด “เอาชาสามถ้วยกับเค้กชิ้นเล็กสามชิ้นนะ วันนี้พวกเรามากันสามคน เขาชื่อเบน มาจากอังกฤษ และยังพูดไทยไม่ได้ เขาอยู่ห้องเดียวกับมะลิที่โรงเรียน”

“ได้เลยค่ะ คุณน้อย เดี๋ยวดิฉันเอามาให้ทันทีค่ะ” เกลยิ้มให้เบนเล็กน้อยก่อนเดินออกไป

“ดีจังเลยนะ” ยายน้อยพูด “ฉันชอบนั่งตรงนี้ดูเรือแล่นผ่านไปมา แล้วตอนนี้เราก็มีเพื่อนใหม่อีกคนด้วย”

มะลิแปลให้เบนฟัง เพราะแม้ว่ายายน้อยจะพูดอังกฤษได้บ้าง แต่เธอเผลอพูดภาษาไทยออกมาโดยไม่ทันคิด เมื่อได้ฟังคำแปล ยายน้อยจึงพูดว่า “ขอโทษนะเบน ยายไม่ได้พูดอังกฤษมาหลายปีแล้ว เลยลืมไปว่าเธอฟังไทยไม่ออก ถ้าเธอช่วยพวกเราเรียนอังกฤษ แล้วพวกเราช่วยเธอเรียนไทย ก็คงจะดีมากเลย เธอว่าไหม?”

“Certainly, Grandma Noi. I will get them for you right away”. Gail smiled at Ben briefly and left.

“Isn’t this nice?” said Grandma Noi I like to sit here and watch the boats passing, and now we have a new friend too”.

Mali translated for Ben, because although her grandmother could speak some English, she had spoken in Thai without thinking. When she heard the translation, Grandma Noi said, “Sorry, Ben. I have not spoken English for years. I forgot that you don’t speak

Thai. It would be lovely if you could help us learn English, and we will help you learn Thai. What do you think?”“That would be very good for me, er, er Mrs… er…”

“Oh, you can call me Grandma Noi, or grandmother, if you prefer”.

“Thank you, Mrs. Noi, er, grandmother, er Grandma Noi. Thank you”, and they all chuckled and smiled at Ben’s awkwardness in the traditional Thai manner. Soon, Ben was smiling, and even laughed back. It looked as if the three of them would become very good friends indeed.

“นั่นดีมากเลยครับ เอ่อ เอ่อ คุณ… เอ่อ…”

“เรียกฉันว่าคุณน้อย หรือจะเรียกว่ายายก็ได้ ถ้าเธออยากเรียกแบบนั้น”

“ขอบคุณครับ คุณน้อย เอ่อ คุณยาย ขอบคุณครับ” แล้วทุกคนก็หัวเราะเบา ๆ และยิ้มให้กับความเก้ ๆ กัง ๆ ของเบนตามแบบคนไทย ไม่นานนัก เบนก็เริ่มยิ้ม และหัวเราะไปกับพวกเขาด้วย ดูเหมือนว่าทั้งสามคนจะกลายเป็นเพื่อนที่ดีต่อกันมากทีเดียว
