Why Tea and Reading Belong Together
There are few pairings in life as natural as tea and reading books. Bread and butter, fish and chips, gin and tonic – all worthy contenders, but none offer the quiet, restorative magic of a warm cup of tea and a good story.
Think about it. Reading is a journey, whether it’s into the mists of fantasy, the depths of history, or the twists of a thriller. Tea is its perfect travelling companion: soothing, uplifting, and infinitely adaptable to mood and moment.
The Ritual of the Kettle
Every reader knows that a book sets the pace. Some novels demand to be devoured in one sitting; others invite you to linger. The same goes for tea. Boiling the kettle, waiting for the leaves to steep, adding (or not adding) milk and sugar – it’s a ritual that mirrors the way we prepare ourselves to sink into another world. The act of making tea slows us down, much like opening a book. Both signal: “It’s time to leave the noise outside and slip into something more comfortable.”
Matching Teas with Genres
It’s tempting to believe that certain teas belong with certain genres:
- A robust English Breakfast is the obvious choice for a classic novel. Jane Austen’s heroines would no doubt approve.
- Earl Grey, with its bergamot twist, feels like the right partner for a detective mystery – refined, slightly mysterious, and a little bit daring.
- Green tea seems perfect for science fiction: clean, sharp, and futuristic.
- Herbal blends – chamomile, peppermint, or something more exotic – suit fantasy. You never know what you’re going to get, but the experience is usually calming and a touch otherworldly.
Of course, rules are meant to be broken. A cup of Assam with a crime thriller? Why not. Jasmine tea with medieval history? Certainly. The best part about pairing tea and books is that there’s no wrong answer.
A Shared Comfort
What tea and reading truly share is comfort. Both are escapes that cost little, yet offer enormous returns. On a rainy afternoon, when the world feels a bit too loud, a blanket, a steaming mug, and a thick paperback can turn the gloomiest day into a retreat.
And perhaps that’s why so many readers are also tea drinkers. Tea doesn’t shout for attention; it doesn’t jolt you awake like coffee. It sits patiently, keeping pace with your turning pages, offering warmth when the plot twists or the villain appears.
Brewing Stories of Our Own
At Megan Publishing Services, we often say that books are companions for life. But perhaps we should extend the same courtesy to tea. Both have ancient traditions; both travel the world in countless varieties; both bring people together in quiet moments.
So the next time you open a new novel, don’t forget to put the kettle on. After all, reading every good story deserves a good brew.
