This striking crimson infusion has become a favourite in our home, especially when we want something naturally sweet yet gently spiced. It’s caffeine-free, packed with antioxidants, and just plain delicious!

🫖 Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons rooibos (loose) 🌾
  • 1 tablespoon dried hibiscus petals 🌺
  • 1 cinnamon stick or 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 🌿
  • 1 litre boiling water 💧

🍵 Method:

  • Place all ingredients in a heatproof jug, teapot, or saucepan.
  • Pour over 1 litre of freshly boiled water.
  • Cover and steep for 15–20 minutes.
  • Strain and serve warm, or let cool and refrigerate for a chilled version.

💡 Tip:

Try letting it sit longer… two or three hours, and put it in the fridge till cold. Then add ice 🙂 However, it is also a warming drink when you’re feeling chilly, in which case drink warm.

📚 Potential Benefits:

🌾 Rooibos

  • Rich in antioxidants (aspalathin and nothofagin)
  • May support heart health and reduce blood pressure
  • Traditionally used to soothe digestion and skin irritation
  • Naturally caffeine-free

🌺 Hibiscus

  • May help lower blood pressure
  • Contains vitamin C and other immune-boosting compounds
  • Known to support liver function and metabolism
  • Can aid digestion and reduce bloating

🌿 Cinnamon

  • May help balance blood sugar levels
  • Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties
  • Traditionally used to warm the body and stimulate circulation
  • Adds natural sweetness, reducing the need for sugar

🌱 My Notes:

  • Rooibos gives body and natural sweetness.
  • Hibiscus adds a tangy freshness and gorgeous colour.
  • Cinnamon rounds it out with gentle spice and warmth. It is one of my favourite flavours.
  • I add a (Kaffir) lime leaf to a lot of my teas because it is a traditional Thai remedy for cellulitis. It certainly helps me, and I just love the flavour 🙂

🍯 Optional Extras:

A slice of orange, some fresh ginger, or a teaspoon of honey can add a new twist depending on your mood or the weather, but so can a simple lime leaf.

📘 Reading Tip:

This tea strikes me as adventurous. Rooibos is new on me, but it comes from wild South Africa! I don’t mean that in a disparaging way, but South Africa means wild animals and diamonds to me 🙂 Then there’s exotic Cinnamon from some far away Pacific Island and Hibiscus from sultry Asia. My Hibiscus comes from our garden. so, with all that in mind, I am going to recommend Dead Centre – an action thriller set in nine countries including South Africa and Thailand. Two out of three ain’t bad 🙂
